Britain's Hilliard Ensemble made a landmark recording of Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories around 1990, but since then has focused mostly on music earlier and later often much later than the late Renaissance. Now, with numerous changes in personnel under its belt, it shows that the group has not lost its way with this deliberately outrageous Italian composer. The elegant rhetoric betrays Gesualdo's aristocratic background, and its internal contradiction neatly reflects the baffling ingenuity of his work, whose dissonances were literally centuries ahead of his time, their bold gambits regarded with suspicion by his 16th-century peers, and even now testing the imagination and ingenuity of even as accomplished a team as the Hilliard quartet. Album 2012 21 Songs. The British vocal group's 1990 recording of the Tenebrae Responsories, which won awards including the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, is now widely regarded a reference recording of the work. Through the years, the Hilliards have kept the Responsories in their concert repertoire. For this recording, realized at Propstei St. Gerold in November 2009, the Hilliard quartet of David James, Rogers Covey-Crump, Steven Harrold and Gordon Jones was augmented by soprano Monika Mauch and second countertenor David Gould, both of whom have a history with the group.
