Subramanyam LSalaam Bombay. Salaam Bombay. Bombay is a 1988 Indian Hindi-language crime drama film, directed, co-written and co-produced by Mira Nair. The screenwriter was Nair's creative collaborator Sooni Taraporevala. This was the first feature film directed by Nair. The film depicts the daily lives of children living in slums in Bombay now Mumbai, India's largest city, as well as organized crime scenes in India. It stars Shafiq Syed, Raghuvir Yadav, Anita Kanwar, Nana Patekar, Hansa Vithal, Chanda Sharma in the lead roles. Album 1988 21 Songs. More By L. Free Your Mind. Global Fusion. India's Master Musicians. This 1998 soundtrack to the movie Salaam Bombay is a jazz fusion or, more appropriately, world fusion mix that on certain songs complements the film with its mix of jazz and more traditional Indian instruments. Where Subramaniam does succeed is on songs such as Chaipau's Theme, with its dominant bassline, Chillum's Theme, which successfully highlights his remarkable violin skills, and Escape From the Chiller Room, a haunting ethereal song that perfectly matches its title with a mournful tone. Salaam Bombay is a VERY different type of filmmaking from what they usually see, and they noticed the long, lingering shots the muted color palate and the untutored acting of the cast. I would have loved to have had more information for them about Indian culture, so I could have answered some of their more difficult questions, but I found what I could on the web. Having watched Satyajit Rays Apu Trilogy as well as Manahagar The Big City , I was eager to delve deeper into the world of Indian cinema. So I followed a recommendation from one of my film books and watched Mira Nairs 1988 film Salaam Bombay
