Kurzes Intro

There is never much doubt that Mark Murphy is a jazz singer. He continues, even after 40 years of recording, to take wild chances on this CD. The first few songs on the set are fairly straightforward if one can consider an uptempo rendition of Baltimore Oriole to be conventional. The music, which includes originals by Donald Fagen and Pat Metheny then becomes funky for a bit from the sixth number on, the performances are quite modern yet not really classifiable as anything but creative jazz. Song for the Geese is a vocal jazz music album recording by MARK MURPHY released in 1997 on CD, LPVinyl andor cassette. Song For The Geese is the quintessential recording of an extraordinary singer and lyricist. On his first recording for a major label in three decades, Murphys vibrant vocals are vitalized by inventive, energized arrangements. Also notable, Murphys superb scatting on Baltimore Oriole, which brings to mind Ella Fitzgeralds opinion that Mark Murphy is my equal. The 65-year-old cool cat of vocalese, indisputably the hippest hip male singer on the scene today, has reached a lofty creative plateau here, not just performing but living each song. Mark Murphy sings at Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay, California on August 3, 1980. After disappointing album sales, in 1958 Murphy moved to Los Angeles, where he recorded three albums for Capitol Records, and had a minor hit single with This Could Be the Start of Something. But this was not enough for him to be retained by Capitol, so he returned to New York in the early '60s. Here he recorded two albums for Riverside Records: the album Rah. In August 1997, BMGRCA Victor released Song For The Geese, for which he received his fifth and final Grammy nomination
