Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin favourites. 24, is an opera lyrical scenes in 3 acts 7 scenes, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto, organised by the composer himself, very closely follows certain passages in Alexander Pushkin's novel in verse, retaining much of his poetry. Tchaikovsky's friend Konstantin Shilovsky contributed M. Triquet's verses in Act 2, Scene 1, while Tchaikovsky himself arranged the text for Lensky's arioso in Act 1, Scene 1, and almost all of Prince Gremin's aria in Act 3. After receivinglistening to the first few recent CD releases of the Belgrade series of Russian operas on Decca Eloquence, my anticipation for an excellent Eugene Onegin were quite high. But I was not at all ready for the superb performance that I have just listened to. Oscar Danon paces the performance with a master's hand. The dances are sprightly and perfectly paced, and all the aching yearning and intensity of Tatiana's Letter scene is fully conveyed by the excellent soprano and the orchestra supporting her. Opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is considered the most popular Russian opera in Russia and worldwide. It was the second opera produced by the National Theatres Opera, right after Pucinis Madame Butterfly, with which the Opera started its professional activities in 1920. Eugene Onegin was the first performance of the National Theatres Opera after the liberation in the Second World War. It was performed on 17th February 1945, when Oskar Danon, a young Director of the Opera, had his debut at the conductors stand and who would continue to conduct this opera with special fondness for it.
